How To Choose A Safe Sunscreen That Will Actually Work?

by Expertish

Even if you don’t have a rigid skincare routine, never miss out on the most important product i.e. Sunscreen. It is really essential to help your skin age gracefully. Sunscreen works as a shield for your skin and protects it from harmful UV rays. The sun’s UV rays can cause tanning, redness and irritation. In some cases, it can even leads to skin cancer. So choosing the right sunscreen is as essential as a safe sunscreen.

It is important that you look into a few factors before deciding on the correct sunscreen for your skin and these are the points you should consider.

1. Expiry Date

The Expiration date on any product is important. And it is crucial in sunscreen. The whole point of a Sunscreen is to act as a protective layer on your skin against the sun’s harmful rays. Over time the active ingredients that protect against the UV rays become less effective. So the sunscreen basically becomes useless.

2. SPF

You must have heard this term everywhere. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It measures the length of time your sunscreen can protect your skin from harmful UV rays. So a sunscreen with higher SPF protection is no doubt very helpful and safe too. You should choose one with SPF above 30. A sunscreen with SPF 50 is an ideal option.

3. UV Protection

The sun’s rays have two types of UV rays- UVA and UVB. And both are harmful to the skin. So you should look for a sunscreen with broad-spectrum UV protection.

4. Water-Resistant

This is important as it would prevent your product from getting washed off in the sweat. No Sunscreen is completely water-proof. But if less amount of product is lost by water then it is better. So try and look for sunscreens that you can wear to a pool party too.

5. EWG Verified

The environmental working group is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment. It is important we become sustainable. All our actions affect the environment equally. So using a sunscreen that is environmentally friendly is a win.

6. Prefer mineral over chemical sunscreens

Sunscreens are of two types- physical and chemical. Physical/Mineral sunscreens have ingredients that block the UV rays by creating a barrier on your skin. Chemical ones, however, get absorbed in your skin. It is best to avoid such toxic ingredients. Though most of them are banned and only suitable ones are available in the market but if you are new sunscreen user then prefer mineral ones.

7. Suits your skin

You must be mindful of your skin’s texture. Every skin type is unique so look out for a sunscreen that suits your skin type. If you have any irritation or redness after using a product you should discontinue it immediately. People who have combination to oily skin should stick to a gel formula. Whereas those having dry and sensitive skin can use a moisturizing one with calming ingredients

Apart from all these helpful tips, make sure to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. And don’t think that you can do without sunscreen on cloudy days. The UV rays can still harm your skin. Use sunscreen even if you have a base tan. It is not enough to protect your skin.
